Temporomandibular Disorders in Adolescence - Orthodntic Treatment Complication?

TMD - temporomandibular disorders represent a quite often medical problem for all age groups of patients.The prevalence is according to the statistic data much higher in young people (65% at the age of 20-50 years and the lower age limit is still decreasing). Some form of discopathy was verified in 34% of adolescent patients (16-19 years of age) by MRI. Does the orthodontic treatment pose the risk or the starting moment of these disorders? Is it possible to improve or treat TMD by the orthodontic treatment? The actual overview on the most often TMD, causal connections and treatment procedures will be discussed.
