TMD Disorder and Orthodontic Treatment

PROF. ALADIN SABBAGH

Keynote Lecture - Friday, September 23, 2016

TMD is a multifactorial disorder; orthodontic treatment can help treating the TMD especially if the malocclusion has been detected as the main reason. Temporomandibular joint screening with the means of the manual functional diagnostic and the AquaSplint greatly simplifies the complex topic of TMD prior/during to the orthodontic rehabilitation and is indispensable for preventive, therapeutic, and forensic reasons not just to treat orthodontic cases with a TMD history but also to avoid iatrogenic mishaps during orthodontic therapy. Furthermore, orthodontic planning and prognosis may be improved in many cases. The recent study’s shows that the clicking phenomenon is not necessary a result of the malocclusion, this new finding changed the management and the therapeutic consequence of this phenomenon also during the orthodontic therapy. This Lecture will demonstrate the diagnostic and therapy in practical steps supported by treated cases and scientific evidence, also the indications, contraindications, frailer and relapse will be discussed.
