Early Treatment and Redirection of Eruption with Lip bumpers and Bite Plateau

PROF. MARCEL KORN

Congress Course - Thursday, September 22, 2016

This presentation will describe an efficient and effective early treatment protocol during the middle mixed dentition period of eruption. Research regarding eruption science and redirection of eruption will be shown while managing the most common problems of crowding, overbite and Class II malocclusion. Lip bumpers, bite plateau, and mini-functional appliances will be employed in conjunction with redirection of eruption to treat malocclusions early during the eruption process. Prominent academics and researchers claim that early treatment with two phase protocols take too long, cost too much, have long transition times, and usually require a substantial second phase with fixed appliances. They have had a powerful influence on the orthodontic specialty. The research performed by these academics will be shown to be deficient and incomplete. Many issues related to early treatment such as crowding, deep bite, molar rotation and eruption disturbances were not addressed by the research nor at the “Early Treatment Symposia”. Only the Bionator was researched and allowed to represent the entire early treatment and functional appliance area. The objective of this presentation is to revisit the argument regarding Early Treatment and defend an alternative approach to early treatment vs. the conclusions reached by the critics of a two phase approach.
