Aesthetic corrections and teeth whitening in orthodontic anomalies
Keynote Lecture - Saturday, October 2, 2010
Modern treatment methods have significantly improved treatment options in
patients with orthodontic anomalies. However, treatment planning requires
team work. The latter is useful both in planning orthodontic treatment and in
situations when a patient comes with a primary requirement for an aesthetic
solution to his/her teeth. Aesthetic corrections using composites in a number
of cases represent a welcome completion of a demanding orthodontic therapy;
in other cases the success of such treatment requires prior orthodontic
treatment.
The aim of the lecture is to show the possibilities, pitfalls and limits of aesthetic
corrections of the shape, colour and position of teeth. It presents the most
frequent cases of gap closures, dental crown remodelling, tooth width delimitation
and colour correction of teeth. After patients complete orthodontic
treatment, they often perceive even minor disharmony in colour and shape,
which they had not seen as important before, and often ask for teeth whitening.
Part of the lecture is therefore devoted to teeth whitening, providing an
overview with a focus on the treatment of orthodontic anomalies, and it also
touches upon the possibilities of external and internal whitening, its limits
and risks including microabrasion.
