About author:

Dr. Elizabeth Menzel completed her Degree in Dentistry at the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa with distinction. She continued her Postgraduate training as an orthodontist in Germany and then went on to undertake her training as an assistant dentist for orthodontics in the department of Orthodontics at the University of Kiel. She completed her training specialising in temporo-mandibular joint disorders in 1996. Then she performed her examination in postgraduate orthodontics and received her qualification as a specialist in orthodontics with honours. In 2000, she realised her own practice as an orthodontist registered at the Bavarian Dental Council. Dr. Menzel obtained the membership of the British GDC in 2004 and registered as a dentist in the UK. Since becoming an active lecturer, with emphasis on orthodontic treatment of temporomandibular joint treatment in 2006, Dr. Menzel has been lecturing around the world receiving international recognition, starting her international career by working in Vilnius Lithuania as a specialist Orthodontist for CMD treatments. In her capacity as a lecturer Dr. Elizabeth Menzel has held courses in over 16 countries amongst others in the USA, United Kingdom, China, Russia, Germany, France, Spain, Switzerland and Austria, South Africa, Lithuania, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Poland and Australia. She is a member of various international and national societies namely Pierre Fauchard Society, Diplomate of the German Board of Orthodontics, honorary member of the iAOI Taiwan. Currently Dr. Menzel is working in her own practice as an orthodontist and furthermore is an organising member of the multidisciplinary specialist network for the treatment of cranio-mandibular disorders


Abstract of the lecture:

In this lecture a summary of all the facts pertaining to the TMD patient beginning with aetiology and the connection to breathing issues eg. Apnoea will be summarised. This will be presented in such manner that both the audience that attended the pre-conference course, as well as the day visitors may benefit from the structure presented to demonstrate the systematic approach to the pathological orthodontic patient and how the treatment is managed in a two phase therapy. A brief introduction to the classification and categorisation of the dysfunctional patient will be followed by a demonstration of how these treatments are designed and managed and stabilised. The lecture will be concluded with clinical case presentations demonstrating the concept of treating the dysfunctional patient.
