Abstract of the lecture:

Pharmacological as well as non-pharmacological management of patients with cardiovascular diseases CVDs) in the Czech Republic is of a high standard. In order to optimize the care for cardiovascular patients, it is essential not only to identify and manage the conventional risk factors, but also to identify and manage the new risk factors that may affect their morbidity and mortality, but also their quality of life. These new factors include sleep disordered breathing (SDB). For cardiovascular system, sleep is a period of physiological rest and SDB causes disruptions thereof. The SDB diagnosis and treatment is, thanks to the already confirmed significance of sleep apnea (SA) as an influenceable risk factor contributing to the onset and progression of majority of CVDs, an important and rapidly developing area of cardiology. Thus, a new multidisciplinary field called “sleep cardiology”comes into existence. Sleep cardiology focuses not only on SDB, but also on other sleep disorders associated with cardiovascular system such as insomnia, sleep deprivation or circadian rhythm disorders.
