Risks and mistakes in treatment planning in the Surgery First combined orthodontic-surgical therapy

René Foltán

Keynote Lecture - Friday, 15 September 2017

Surgery First (SF) is a standard therapeutic modality in almost every case of skeletal class III and some class II patients. With a growing number of indications of this modality, the preparation and treatment planning is becoming a routine. However, every routine leads to a certain form of simplification and as a result not enough attention is paid to treatment planning. This can be a source of many mistakes. But a perfect treatment planning is a key requirement for a successful result in the SF approach. Many patients were treated unsuccessfully in the past by a camouflage orthodontic treatment and only after the failure of such treatment, a surgical treatment, ideally SF was finaly suggested, in order to shorten the orthodontic treatment time. But in these orthodontically compensated cases, new set of complications can sometimes paradoxically occur. This lecture will focus on the most frequent mistakes in orthodontic and surgical treatment planning and in the following implementation.
